I get it How long should a photographer take to edit family photos… it’s a big debate! 2 weeks? 6 months? Oh MY!

One of the most common questions after a family photoshoot is, “When will I get my pictures back?” You’ve put so much effort into coordinating outfits, getting everyone to cooperate, and making sure the session goes smoothly—so naturally, you’re excited to see the final images!

While turnaround times vary by photographer, I firmly believe that family photos should be delivered within 14 days or 21 days max during the busy Fall season but I know how long it takes to get family pictures back is your top priority. Anything longer than 2 weeks, in most cases, is simply too long—unless the photographer has taken on more than they can realistically handle and that happens a lot of times.

Typical Turnaround Time for Family Photos

Most professional photographers set their turnaround time based on their workflow, editing process, and workload. Here is a general idea of when to expect family photos from a photographer:

• Fast turnaround (7–14 days) – Photographers who prioritize efficiency and client experience will usually have your images delivered within two weeks. This ensures you get to enjoy your photos while the excitement from your session is still fresh.
• Moderate turnaround (3–4 weeks) – Some photographers may take a little longer, especially during busy seasons, but anything beyond this timeframe may indicate they are juggling too many sessions at once.
• Extended turnaround (4+ weeks) – If you’re waiting over a month for your family photos, it’s often a sign that the photographer has overbooked or doesn’t have an efficient editing system in place.
