We’ve all been there—your outfits are coordinated, the sun is shining, and your photographer is ready to capture the magic. But your kids? Not so much. Whether it’s an epic meltdown, a refusal to smile, or a sudden fascination with every stick and bug in sight, uncooperative kiddos can make photo day feel like a challenge. Don’t worry—I’ve got you covered because I have been at this for 15 years and I have found many ways around kiddos seemingly not liking have their photos taken. Here’s how to handle those unpredictable moments and still get beautiful, authentic family photos you’ll cherish forever.
1. Let Them Be Themselves
Kids are not tiny adults, and that’s part of what makes family photos so special. If your child wants to twirl, jump, or strike a silly pose, go with it! Often, these candid moments end up being the most heartfelt images. You think the kids playing with sticks, picking up bugs or playing in puddles will ruin photos but those moments that my clients end up loving the most!
2. Snacks and Breaks Are Lifesavers
Hungry kids = grumpy kids. Bring along their favorite snacks and a water bottle to keep them happy. Quick breaks can also help reset the mood if things get overwhelming. Also I always recommend having dinner before your session if you can so that everyone is full and being hangry isn’t an issue. 🙂
3. Focus on Fun, Not Perfection
Family photos aren’t about stiff poses or perfect smiles—they’re about connection. When you laugh, play, and interact naturally, it eases the pressure on everyone and creates genuine moments to capture.
4. Trust Your Photographer
As a family photographer, I’ve seen it all—from stubborn toddlers to shy teens. I know how to connect with kids and bring out their best, even if the day starts off rocky. Trust me to work my magic and turn those wild moments into beautiful art. I have never had a session in 15 years where the family walked away with crying or unhappy kids. It’s truly a work of art to see a session unfold and to get back your gallery and see just how much magic I captured while the kids acted silly!
At the end of the day, uncooperative kids are part of the story—and that’s okay! Some of the best family photos happen in those unscripted moments. So, take a deep breath, relax, and let’s create something amazing together.
